There Can Be Only One 'Highlander' and It Might Be Ryan Reynolds

FirstShowing.net - 2 hours 21 min ago
Ryan Reynolds

Though the actor has already taken over two different comic book characters in both the Marvel and DC universes, it looks like Ryan Reynolds is ready to take over yet another high profile franchise. Variety reports Reynolds is currently the front runner to take the lead role in the remake of Highlander from director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (Intruders). The original epic fantasy (starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery) had our hero battling an unstoppable barbarian who covets the power gained from there being only one of near-immortal beings left alive. However, plot details on the remake are now under wraps. ›››

Hyde Park on Hudson Trailer

"I now see how important this weekend was..." Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for Hyde Park on Hudson, a film about the weekend in 1939 when the King of England visited President Franklin D. Roosevelt's upstate New York estate. Bill Murray plays FDR, along with Olivia Williams as Eleanor Roosevelt, Laura Linney as Margaret Suckley, Samuel West as King George VI (the same one from The King's Speech) and Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth. This has a very light, fun, comical tone similar to The King's Speech in many ways, but with its own quirks, including of course Bill Murray. Looks quite good. ›››

'Welcome to the Bathtub' Interactive 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' Site

FirstShowing.net - 5 hours 37 min ago
Beasts of the Southern Wild

I just saw Benh Zeitlin & Court 13's Beasts of the Southern Wild, the top Grand Jury Prize winner in Sundance and my favorite film of that festival, for a second time today at the Cannes Film Festival. It's just as phenomenal a second time. One of my favorite films of the year, it's that good, that moving, that amazing, even seeing it again. Fox Searchlight, who picked up the film and is releasing it this summer, has launched a new interactive website at WelcomeToTheBathtub.com plus a viral Tumblr blog focusing on the small, wet Southern Louisiana region it takes place in nicknamed "The Bathtub". This is cool, visit when you can. ›››

Details on 'Cloud Atlas' Coming Out, WB Screening Nearly 3 Hour Cut

FirstShowing.net - 6 hours 11 min ago
Cloud Atlas

They're finally letting the cat out of the bag. Warner Bros has started screening early cuts of Cloud Atlas, the nearly finished Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer adaptation of David Mitchell's novel, featuring six storylines and actors playing multiple roles/genders/races. This is a project we've followed closely for a long time, not only because it's the latest Wachowskis movie, but because it has the potential to be amazing, with settings that span thousands of years. The studio recently screened the film in Cannes for buyers, and also held test screenings in London and Los Angeles, which I've heard some positive feedback from already. More below! ›››

Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry Reunite for Animated 'Canterville Ghost'

FirstShowing.net - 6 hours 39 min ago
Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry

With the long-running medical drama series "House M.D." coming to an end next week, I'm hoping that means Hugh Laurie will have more time for feature films. He's lent his voice to films like Hop, Monsters vs. Aliens and Arthur Christmas recently (since voice roles are considerably less time consuming when hiatus between seasons of a TV show), and he's adding another one to the mix. However, this time THR reports Laurie will reunite with his old comedy cohort Stephen Fry for the first time in 13 years to lend their voices to an animated film called The Canterville Ghost, an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's short story. ›››

Channing Tatum Mentors Alex Pettyfer in the New 'Magic Mike' Trailer

FirstShowing.net - 7 hours 20 min ago
Magic Mike

While plenty of people have obviously been excited about The Avengers assembling on the big screen, there's an all-male assembly that will have more of the women excited in a whole different way. The first trailer for Magic Mike, the story about the life of a male stripper inspired by the real-life job Channing Tatum once had before making it big in Hollywood, was definitely a tease, and this one is no different. However, this time we see Tatum's titular character taking Alex Pettyfer under his wing. Honestly, shirtless dudes aren't my cup of tea, but I'd be lying if I said the film didn't look interesting. Watch below! ›››

FirstShowing.net - 16 hours 15 min ago
Peter and the Starcatchers

There's no doubt about it: J.M. Barrie's classic Peter Pan is so hot right now. Neverland's favorite son is already the subject of two different movies in development, and now Deadline reports that another story about the ultimate Lost Boy is in the works at Disney, the studio that brought us Peter's animated adventures way back in 1953. Jesse Wigutow will adapt Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's book Peter and the Starcatchers, which is another Peter Pan origin story that sets Peter and the infamous Lost Boys on an adventure to make sure that magical "starstuff" stays out of the hands of the evil pirate Black Stache. ›››

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 22:04
Gods of Egypt

Dark City director Alex Proyas hit a bit of a rough patch recently, with the back-to-back disappointments of having the plug pulled on both Dracula: Year Zero and Paradise Lost. But the resilient director scooped up a directing gig for the mystery story The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag, and things are looking up for him with another project as well. Variety reports that Proyas is in talks to direct Gods of Egypt, a fantasy adventure about a common thief and a god on a quest through the land of great pyramids. ›››

Original 'Blade Runner' Writer Returns to Pen Sequel for Ridley Scott

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 18:18
Blade Runner

Last November sci-fi fans got a special treat from director Ridley Scott when he confirmed that he was looking to direct a sequel to Blade Runner, the classic 1982 sci-fi film starring Harrison Ford. The film is based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? and it was screenwriter Hampton Fancher who adapted the book for the big screen, and now Heat Vision has word that he's being brought back to script the sequel for Alcon Entertainment. As expected, plot details are non-existent, but the story will be set "some years after the first film concluded." That's about the best damn news we've heard all week. ›››

Spectacular Paris Subway 'Prometheus' Giant Head Marketing Display

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 18:04
Prometheus Subway

Why does Europe get all the best marketing stunts?! We're going a bit Prometheus crazy here, considering we're counting down the days (22 left!) in the three weeks left until it arrives in theaters. The final pieces of marketing are coming together, and one huge stunt in Europe, specifically Paris, includes an abandoned subway station being completely decked out with that giant head and blue lights for riders to see. And it's incredible. There's even a video of the subway ride through the station, it's amazing, this is brilliant. Shots have hit the web on the Weyland Investors Tumblr (via MovieViral) and they're definitely must see photos. ›››

Mickey Rourke & Nicolas Cage Ready for Noir Action in 'Marble City'

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 16:22
Nicolas Cage / Mickey Rourke

It's hard to think of modern film noir without thinking about Sin City (and its sequel, which just got a release date). One of that film's stars, Mickey Rourke, is returning to the genre, and this time he's bringing Nicolas Cage along with him. ComingSoon says the two will co-star in Marble City for The Midnight Meat Train director Ryuhei Kitamura. It's a revenge story about a newly released prisoner who hunts down the man who put him behind bars, which is a pretty common theme we're seeing in a lot of films these days. Marble City is described as "Kill Bill meets Drive," and actually sets the bar really damn high. ›››

'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' Hits the Big Screen October 2013 in 3D

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 14:54
Sin City

We've already heard that the sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is officially in development and moving towards production. Most of the original cast is said to be returning with some unknown new cast members, and now a press release reveals the film will hit theaters on October 4th, 2013. Plot details are being kept under tight wraps at the moment, but the second volume of the graphic novel follows Dwight (Clive Owen) stuck with only a seedy gumshoe job and some demons, thinking of all the ways he's screwed up and looking for one chance to wipe the slate clean and dig his way out of the gray hell that is his life. ›››

Watch: Bradley Cooper & Jeremy Irons in First Trailer for 'The Words'

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 12:46
The Words

Earlier this week Bradley Cooper was in pursuit of Dax Shepard in the trailer for Hit & Run, but now he's cleaned up without dreadlocks and hiding secrets in the trailer debut for The Words, which premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. The film follows a struggling writer who steals another man's (Jeremy Irons) personal, long lost story and gains literary fame because of it. However, that story is just part of another author's story, and there's some Inception-like layers to dig through. It's an interesting drama with some great performances, but a sluggish third act kept me from truly loving it. Watch it below! ›››

Emperor

There's plenty of films coming out of the woodwork during the Cannes Market at the festival in France right now, but we're not following all of them, since projects like this many times are announced and die just as quickly. However, every now and then a project makes an interesting sales push. Such is the case with Emperor, a film from Girl with the Pearl Earring director Peter Webber which stars Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones in an epic story of love and understanding set amidst the tensions and uncertainties of the days following the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. We have a first look at the film below! ›››

First Awesome Teaser Poster for James Bond's 'Skyfall' Hits the Web

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 11:00
Skyfall

Skyfall. What does it mean? Is it a secret code word? A weapon? We'll find out soon enough. 007.com has just unveiled the first official teaser poster for James Bond's Skyfall, being directed by Sam Mendes (interview on Skyfall here), starring Daniel Craig as agent 007 for his third time. I've loved almost all the artwork they've made as part of the Daniel Craig series of Bond movies, and this new poster is just as good. This has such a classic, sleek, badass, awesome Bond feel to it and I totally love it, honestly. It's dark, it's eye-catching, it's the Bond gun barrel view, I want the print of this up on my wall right away. Bond is back! ›››

The Golden Briefcase - Battleship

On this week's episode of The Golden Briefcase, Tim & Jeremy are joined by guest Liam O'Donnell, Skyline writer/producer and movie geek, to go through their latest Picks of the Week, talk over the new trailers for Jay Roach's comedy The Campaign and Rueben Fleischer's badass Gangster Squad and much more. The main topic of the night was a discussion on Toys and Films (in honor connection with Hasbro's Battleship hitting theaters this weekend). The guys go over how toys based on movies and vice versa have changed throughout the years and what we think is still coming, for better or worse, from this sub-genre. ›››

John Cusack to Play 'Grand Piano' in New Thriller with Elijah Wood

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 10:42
John Cusack

Just recently we heard about an interesting new thriller called Grand Piano, a film that is being described as Speed at a piano as it sees Elijah Wood as a once-great concert pianist who suffers from stage fright and comes back to perform after a five-year hiatus. Just as the pianist sits down at his instrument to play the first bar of music, he notices a threatening note on his music sheet that informs him that he must play the best concert of his life in order to save the life of himself and his wife. Now Variety reports John Cusack is in talks to star opposite Wood in the film, and I'm just hoping he's the man behind this threat. More below! ›››

First Look: Liam Neeson Points Guns and Snaps Necks in 'Taken 2'

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 10:27
Taken 2

Audiences are definitely eager to see Liam Neeson kick more asses in the anticipated sequel Taken 2, which is hitting theaters this fall, and while we're still waiting for a trailer to see the man himself in action, some first look photos from the film will have to suffice for now. Needless to say, they show Neeson looking like a badass again with his very particular set of skills being put to good use. The sequel sees the father of one of the men Neeson's character killed in the first film seeking revenge, and he says, "They kidnap him to humiliate him, torture him, and ultimately bring him back to the village in Albania." See the photos below! ›››

Cannes 2012 Review: Jacques Audiard's Raw, Emotional 'Rust & Bone'

FirstShowing.net - Thu, 05/17/2012 - 09:09
Rust & Bone Review

Jacques Audiard has quickly become one of my favorite directors. I first fell in love with his work a few years back seeing Un Prophete at Cannes (my review), which should've won the Palme d'Or. Audiard is back again this year with his follow-up called Rust & Bone (aka De rouille et d'os). This emotional drama tells of a melancholic love story between two lost souls, played by Matthias Schoenaerts (most recently seen in the Oscar nominated film Bullhead) and French actress Marion Cotillard (last in Inception, Midnight in Paris and Contagion). It's openly raw and lascivious, but doesn't quite reach the heights of Un Prophete. ›››
