Jesus, this movie came out in 1985!? Am I really getting that old? I can remember seeing this in the theater with my family, and thinking it was the greatest site mine eyes hath ever behold. What kid didn't want to be John Rambo after this movie? What kid didn't want to hide in a tree, in the middle of a thunderstorm, and then shoot his neighbor with a bow and arrow and then watch him explode? (not saying I did this of course...)
Now, when you think of suit-up scenes, you think of guys like Stallone. And you obviously think of movies like 'Rambo: First Blood Part II'. (I have to constantly write that full title out, because for some dumb reason they named the fourth installment of this franchise 'Rambo).
Now yes, this movie is a little dated. It hasn't aged as well as say, 'Lethal Weapon' or 'Top Gun'. But I gotta be honest, I was a little disappointed by the suit-up scene. The shots are cool. You get gritty close-ups of Stallone's muscular body, all soaked in mud and rain (God, I sound gay right now). The score is great. It's the classic theme from the movie, and boy is it booming during this scene.
But the suit-up gets interrupted just when it gets going, by a lame, tender moment of Rambo grieving over the grave of Co Bao. She lies in her muddy grave that Rambo dug for her. And just when we should see our man doing some cool bow and arrow shit, he instead interrupts the flow so he can bend down and rub his hands in the mud over her grave. Oh, and let's not forget that stupid green necklace she gives him. It's not that I got anything against hot Asian brawds, it's just that I never bought this particular one. You'll remember that her death scene is quite cheesy.
Anyway, I digress. The scene is still pretty badass. And it's a great precursor to an insane action-packed climax. I was just a little let-down. My nostalgic mind went and built this one up differently.
