How do you prepare a crowd for a wicked movie?

I posed a very simple question in the title of this review.

The answer is very simple — Be sure to have a wicked suit-up scene during the opening credits.

There are several things that make the suit-up scene in Sin City stand out from it's contemporaries.

First, it doesn't all happen at once. Some people might think that this qualifies it as multiple suit-up scenes but since Marv (Mickey Rourke) is preparing for one fight across this time-span I'm qualifying it as a single scene.

Second, a portion of it is a direct representation of panels from the original comic book. I've included the panels from the comic in this review for comparison.

Ask anyone to describe what Batman wears and after they describe the cowl, they will mention the utility belt. Batman's utility-belt is one of the most important aspects of the character. Combined with his prowess as a detective, his belt allows him the chance to compete with more powerful, and arguably useful, heroes. For some reason, Christopher Nolan has made a habit of overlooking Batman's detective skills, thankfully he has given the belt, and the gadgets it contains, plenty of screen time. This is proven during the film's only suit-up scene.

Word of advice, shithead. Don't you ever wake up.

This is currently one of my favorite scenes for several reasons.

I love that it takes you by surprise. I put in Kill Bill Vol. 1 for the simple joy of watching it. I didn't consider that it would contain a suit-up scene, let alone one that is so wonderfully shot. What makes it even better is if I had been looking for a suit-up scene in this movie, this is certainly not where I would have looked for it.

Jesus, this movie came out in 1985!? Am I really getting that old? I can remember seeing this in the theater with my family, and thinking it was the greatest site mine eyes hath ever behold. What kid didn't want to be John Rambo after this movie? What kid didn't want to hide in a tree, in the middle of a thunderstorm, and then shoot his neighbor with a bow and arrow and then watch him explode? (not saying I did this of course...)

The introduction sequence to sexy super-thief, Christie Allen, in the motion picture D.O.A (Dead or Alive) contains a stimulating, id spinning, suit up. I have been audience to numerous styles and genres of films spanning from the early 1880's (when cinema hypothetically began) to the present date (9/28/08) and this one taps into the very core element of what makes a suit up scene.

The scene begins in the ultra posh, Hong Kong hotel suite of the English accented cat burglar...as she showers...

The Prototype Suit-Up Scene

This suit-up scene is so epic, I don't even know where to begin.

First off, I'd like to say that this is to me, the prototype suit-up scene. In fact, this is the suit-up scene that inspired me to create this site. As a kid, Commando was easily one of my favorite movies. This is Schwarzenegger at his best. Everything about his character, John Matrix, is what a growing boy wants to be.

From the aptly titled film, Smokin Aces, a voyeuristic suit-up scene moved from three stars to four the more I considered it's theme and character development.

The scene opens with Georgia slapping a clip into a handgun -- an inviting suit-up scene from the start. She is in a hotel room at the Nomad, several floors below where Buddy 'Aces' Israel is hiding out in his swank penthouse suite.

If there is one thing you are sure to remember about Halloween 1994, (even if you didn't recall the exact year until right now) it is that nearly everyone was dressed as Brandon Lee's character, Eric Draven, from The Crow. I don't know if everyone thought it was a unique idea for a costume, or if it was just a good choice because it was so easy to make but boy was it popular.

Those of you familiar with that particular introduction are already well acquainted with Craig McCracken's endearing and ingeniously stylized Powerpuff Girls. The hyper editing, break-beat techno infused, minimalism of the Cartoon Network series makes the movie a fun treat that features the origin of the girls' most arcane of arch-enemies (and his very first suit-up scene!)...Mojo Jojo!

"Rambo III" is ridiculous. The movie opens with the suit-up scene. Let's just get that out of the way right off the bat. But I was curious to see if it had yet another suit-up in it closer to the climax. It doesn't. But before I knew that, I pretty much had to fast-forward through the entire movie. I considered it a trip down memory lane, as I don't think I've seen this movie in over a decade.

Point Break is an awesome movie. In fact, it is in my opinion, Keanu Reeves' best work. Reeves is given the opportunity to shine in his portrayal of Ex-College Football star turned FBI agent, Johnny Utah. Reeves is sometimes criticized for his wooden performances, thankfully his role as Utah not only benefits from it but also requires it. But it doesn't end there...

There are many ways for a director and an editor to compose a suit-up scene. The more popular examples though usually involve a character, on their own somewhere, prepping to go do something big. Whether it's someone going on a date, or Arnold Schwarzenegger going to take down an entire compound, this particular type seems to fit the mold of the majority of suit-up scenes we see in cinema.

But there exists another type. And "Mad Max" could be one of its best examples. Its... prototype.

Snake’s back.

John Carpenter’s Escape from New York is one of the greatest movies ever made, hands down. You’ve got post-apocalyptic destruction, intense action sequences, and a bad ass in an eye patch that goes by the name of Snake (and sometimes Plissken, if you can catch him on a good day).

In 1996, when I first saw the trailer for the sequel to this sci-fi/action classic in which our eye patch rocking anti-hero was back, this time to escape from Los Angeles of all places, without hesitation, I pissed my pants.

Then the movie came out and...it was OK.

Geez, what's to say about this scene... hell, this movie... shit, I'll go one further; this director, that's not already been said. (how's that for an elliptical sentence!?) Look, I was never a big fan of the original Batman franchise. At this point, you might be saying, "Well, no shit Sherlock. So it all starts with a naked man. Our villain, Woo-jin, played pitch-perfect by Ji-tae Yu, he steps out of a shower bare-assed. Right at the 01:30:12 mark. Please, please, please note the tramp stamp; get a good long look at it. It's drawn right down into his crack. Seriously; it's not just the ladies that rock the L.B.T. nowadays. The lower back tattoo is officially unisex. Like a pair of Converse All Stars or t-shirts. The color pink.

Then she watches as her S.R.T. pal has his neck ripped open and bled dry, only to get his dead-gangsta swerve on a scene or two later as just another walking corpse.
