In the year of my birth, a movie came out which, cinematically, was a landmark. A box office smash. And the introduction to one of Hollywood's greatest Scientologists: John Travolta. But musically, this same film would mirror an age of Americana best left forgotten, but never so well praised and captured. The disco era!!!

This film was (and still is), "Saturday Night Fever".

Rob Reiner's 'A Few Good Men' is one of those films I've seen probably over thirty times. Not because it's a personal favorite. But because it seems to always be playing on TV. That's not such a bad thing. It's a good film with some intense court room scenes. It's also got Tom in full "Cruise Control". (you'll hear more about this in future reviews). But, lo and behold, it also has a suit-up scene.

I think my review title alone was reason to do a write-up on 'The Last Samurai'. Love him or hate him, Tom Cruise has led a dominant career in some very kick ass movies. He's one of those actors that seems like he can do anything. I picture his agent going to toss a script into the trash, and Cruise going, "Wait. What is that one about" The Agent replies, "Tom, trust me on this one. You play a priest who joins and then leads an Olympic bob-sledding team. It's ridiculous. We wouldn't be able to make it work."

To which Cruise responds, "Oh, we'll make it work..."

The suitup don't make the man, OR: my purse, my hormones! You dirty motherfucking hippie!

I sense that many a monocle has been popped: dude looks like a lady, all ostinato in the act of suiting. The state of Denmark, dig. Not to get all meta (don't mind if I do!), but Transamerica yarns the story of Bree, who is technically still Stanley at time of scene, who is really the incomparable--and almost unrecognizable--entirely XX chromo's Felicity Huffman, stuffing and faux-tucking herself into character. Jame Gumb, your ladyposing was for naught.

Silent save for the sound of a distant siren, Detective Lt. William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) prepares for the first day of his last week in hell. Over the years he has seen it all. If he is very fortunate he will be able to forget some of it as he heads into retirement.

Refined and modest, there is little more in William's kitchen than a chess board and morning light.

It's been kind of a crummy week for Detectives Somerset and Mills.

There was this creep out there, been picking people off. Deadly sin style. Already he's killed five people, with only wrath and envy still at large.

Plus, he took pot shots at the detectives in the hallway of his building. When Mills gave chase, this mook got the drop on him and swatted him upside his head. Real classy.

To top it all off, it's been raining cats and fuckin' dogs all week.

Soren Kierkegaard had a theory about the angst-rich idea of identity, the malcontent and drudgery that made T. Yorke want to explode. "Ceasar or nothing!" yells his metaphorical man, a man who so desparately wants to be not-himself that the mere existence he lives as himself screws grief to the seat of his drawers. He longs for this most lofty of titles as his most swayed opposite, the most extreme version of his would-be self (all the better for the histrionics, my dear); his lack breeds a despair that creates a "disrelationship" between the self and the concept of self.

It seems to me that there are two types of suit-up scenes. You can call them what you like, but I tend to think of them as "traditional" and "odd." Traditional of course would be a scene where the character equips guns, knives and explosives in preparation for battle. Everything else would fall in line with odd.

While this site may have been created based on the philosophy behind traditional suit-ups, I believe that the number of scenes falling into the odd category will eventually equal, if not surpass their counterparts.
